This was a very writing heavy course. Even this late in the program it is designed to challenge you and prepare you for what is to come in just a couple of courses from now.
Now that I reflect on this course and the course number in particular, It is hard to fathom that I have taken the last eight years of courses without a break from when I returned to university at the age of 44 in 2014. Throughout that time, I have taken numerous classes, including all the 100s, 200s, 300s, 400s, 500s, 600s, and now I am finishing up the 700-level ones. It is incredible how much work went into getting here.

Course Description
Rationale
The student in the Doctor of Strategic Leadership program will explore ethics, reasoning, and worldviews to prepare them to guide organizations using sound moral principles. The course will engage and integrate worldviews, logic, and organizational ethics in the context of global complexity from a practical practitioner’s perspective.
Discussions (5)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences; therefore, the student will complete five discussions in this course. Each thread must be 750–1000 words, and include at least four scholarly sources (with a limit of 1 popular press article per module). In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least two other classmates’ threads. Each reply should be 320–380 words and include two scholarly sources. The student is also required to respond to 2 different replies to their thread. Each response must be 220–280 words, and must include at least one scholarly source. If no replies were posted to the student’s initial thread, responses can be posted to the replies of other students’ threads.
Case Study in Ethics Assignment
The student will write a 6–8 page paper in current APA format that examines the ethical dimensions involved in, surrounding, causing, or resulting from a chosen case study. The purpose is to reveal what can be learned about ethics in leadership and organization from observing a real situation or dilemma. The paper must include at least four sources in addition to any course textbooks, and the Bible must be referenced.
Ethical Leadership Article Critique Assignment
The Article Critique assignment aims to examine recent research in ethics with a focus on developing critical consumer information practices while being exposed to contemporary ethical theory work. The student will write a 4–6 page paper in the current APA format. The paper will contain insights and criticism based on a thoughtful review of a chosen article, viewed through the ethical, reasoning, and worldview concepts covered in this course and prior coursework. The paper aims to examine the moral dimensions discussed in the article, the research methods and reasoning employed, the authors’ biases (claimed or unspoken), the key findings, and the resulting questions. In addition to the article reviewed, the Bible, and textbooks, at least two sources must be referenced.
Ethical Leadership Article Critique Peer Review Assignment
The Article Critique Peer Review assignment provides an opportunity to learn from a fellow student’s analysis while seeking to deepen your evaluation of the article and its subject matter. The peer review will also allow the student to practice evaluating others’ efforts and provide feedback incorporating Christian truth and grace. The student will write a 3–4 page paper in the current APA format. In addition to the course textbooks and the Bible, students should draw on in-course and extra-course materials, and reference at least one additional source not used in the original critique.
Research Paper in Ethics Assignment
The Research Paper is an examination of ethical leadership, encompassing the range of complex issues, constructs, forces, and worldviews that influence contemporary leaders. The purpose is for the student to develop their unique concept of the ethical leader by assessing, describing, supporting, and presenting those elements considered most critical. The student will write a 10–14 page paper in the current APA format. The paper must include at least six sources in addition to any course textbooks, and the Bible must be referenced. In addition, Merida, the DSL program reference, must be included and integrated into the discussion as one of the textbooks.
What You Should Know about BMAL 770
I was getting docked points because of APA issues that had never been a problem in the past. Just know that every instructor grades and interprets APA a little differently, and you must show changes in your writing from week to week, even if it is only small.
The first paper of the course was due this week, and it was a case study on an ethical issue in the Johnson (2018) text. I chose the sweat lodge incident in 2009, where two people died at the hands of a self-proclaimed guru.
It made for some interesting research and a fun paper to write. You can read it here later this week. I learned a valuable lesson a couple of courses back: if I post the PDF of the paper here before the professor grades it, it will trigger a 100% TurnItIn score. Be careful if you post your work online as I do.
Here is one of the papers I wrote in this course: Article Critique
Bottom Line
The post reflects on a writing-intensive course within the Doctor of Strategic Leadership program. It highlights the author’s journey through eight years of university courses and the effort required to advance to the 700-level classes. The course aims to prepare students to navigate ethics, reasoning, and worldviews in organizational contexts, requiring several written assignments including discussions, case studies, article critiques, and a research paper, all formatted in APA style. Specific assignments and their requirements are detailed, including word counts and the necessity for scholarly sources. The author shares personal experiences with grading and academic integrity, noting the importance of adhering to APA guidelines and cautioning against posting work online to avoid plagiarism checks. The blog serves as a valuable resource for other students, providing insights and paper examples to offer guidance.
This blog has been found most useful by students reading it in order. I wrote a post a week to chronicle my time in the entire program, and for the most part, they are tagged by course. For example, here is BMAL 770. I have included a lot of my papers as PDFs. Feel free to use them as a guide.
