Course Description
This course is the first step for DSL Doctoral Candidates in the process of developing and completing their research project. Doctoral Candidates will develop Section 1, which includes the Foundation of the Study, to include a detailed Literature Review relevant to the proposed research project.
Rationale
BMAL 887, Doctoral Research Project I, is the first step for DSL doctoral candidates to develop and complete their research project. It provides a focused study of the problem, purpose, significance, theoretical framework, biblical integration, and essential literature relevant to the proposed project.
Doctoral Research Project Guide: Tasks (8)
In BMAL 887, tasks serve as critical checkpoints to ensure that doctoral candidates’ capstone manuscript sections are thoroughly reviewed, meet academic standards, and are approved before progressing to the next stage. The course includes eight key tasks:
Each milestone requires submission through Canvas, where the chair provides detailed feedback to help refine the work and ensure it is methodologically sound and aligned with research objectives. These milestones are essential for maintaining academic rigor, providing structured feedback, and tracking the candidate’s progress. Doctoral candidates are expected to submit milestones on time, incorporate all feedback, and promptly resubmit revised work for approval. Successful completion of these milestones is crucial for the candidate’s progression in the course and their overall dissertation journey, marking significant steps toward achieving their doctoral degree.
Attendance Task: Check-In Quizzes (8)
The quizzes are designed to help candidates self-report their progress in developing the dissertation manuscript. These quizzes serve as a checkpoint for the candidate to reflect on the work accomplished, ensure the candidate is meeting course activity and attendance requirements, and keep the candidate on track.
What You Should Know about BMAL 887
You have made it this far, and you are doing great. You are now a top-notch doctoral researcher, and you are ready to get to work. As they say, you are going to become an expert on your subject.
If you recall, your bachelor’s degree program was designed to teach you critical thinking skills. In your master’s program, it was to teach you how to master a subject. A doctorate program is designed to prepare you to become an expert in your field.
I could probably go on and on about this course, but a couple of pieces of advice:
- Use your time wisely.
- Contact your chair on the first day and establish a relationship with them. They are your ally in this and your most prominent advocate. I made it a point to have a call with my chair once a month.
- Do something every day.
- Find a place to write your project. I wrote every single word of my project at the local Starbucks on Saturday afternoons.
- Find a coach or mentor.
- Find an editor, even if it is your significant other. My wife, Michele, read every single word of my paper aloud. I had her do this so I could hear what I was writing.
- Just know, technically, you are not allowed to take a break in your program from this point forward.
Bottom Line
The post provides an overview of the Doctoral Research Project (DRP), specifically the course BMAL 887, which is the first step for Doctoral Candidates to develop their research projects. It focuses on creating Section 1, the Foundation of the Study, including a comprehensive literature review. The course comprises eight tasks that serve as milestones, allowing candidates to submit their work through Canvas for feedback, which is essential for their progress toward completing their dissertation.
Additionally, candidates take attendance quizzes to self-reflect on their progress. The document emphasizes the importance of effective time management, establishing a solid relationship with the chair, maintaining a daily writing routine, and seeking mentorship and editing support. It also lists other courses in the Doctoral program and suggests materials for research and writing.

This blog has been found most useful by students reading it in order. I wrote a post a week to chronicle my time in the entire program, and for the most part, they are tagged by course. For example, here is BMAL 887. I have included a lot of my papers as PDFs. Feel free to use them as a guide.
