Spring has arrived in Alaska, and it’s time to start the beekeeping season at Forto’s Fort and Bee Farm. In this video, we install a package of approximately 10,000 bees and introduce their queen into the hive while dealing with rainy weather, snow on the ground, and freezing overnight temperatures.
We show how we prepare the hive with insulation, sugar water, pollen patties, and careful queen placement to give our bees the best chance at success in a cold climate. If you’ve ever wondered how beekeeping works in Alaska, this is a great behind-the-scenes look at starting a hive in challenging conditions.
Be sure to subscribe as we document the full season, from hive setup to pollen collection and honey harvest later this summer.
