You are almost to the finish line! By the time I arrived at this course, I thought I was like a rock star. I had been working so hard that I never thought this day would come. I had been in the DRP courses for over two years to this point, but I could finally see the light at the end of the very long tunnel.

This course is the final step in developing the doctoral research project. Doctoral Candidates will conduct their field study, develop and present their findings, and develop Section 3 of their research project. Candidates will combine all three sections into their completed Doctoral Research Project manuscript in preparation for their presentation in BMAL 890.

BMAL 889, Doctoral Research Project III, is the third step for DSL doctoral candidates to develop and complete their research project. It provides a detailed discussion of the research findings and their application to leadership practice.

Discussion: Progress Reports (16)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will submit weekly progress reports throughout the course. The purpose of these discussions is to ensure that the student and their chair understand the work that the student has done and the steps needed to complete itFor each discussion, the student will write a short, informal thread detailing his/her work up to this current module. The thread should be between 150 and 400 words. No peer replies are required; however, the student is encouraged to read the peers’ threads and provide encouragement to foster a sense of community.

Doctoral Research Project Guide: Tasks (8)

The student will locate the task he/she wants to complete in the Doctor of Strategic Leadership Doctoral Research Project Guide. The student must read the information concerning the task, complete the task requirements, and then submit the task to Canvas. After the student submits the task, the student’s faculty member will review the completed task and provide feedback. The student will review the faculty member’s feedback and make any necessary adjustments to the task, then resubmit it in Canvas until the faculty member approves the task and the student receives full credit for the assignment.

  • Task 1: Bullet Point Outline
  • Task 12: The Research Proposal with Permissions & IRB Approval
  • Task 12: The Research Proposal with Permissions & IRB Approval – Admin Review
  • Task 13: Presentation of Findings
  • Task 13: Presentation of Findings – Admin Review
  • Task 14: Supporting Material
  • Task 15: Section 3, Application to Professional Practice
  • Task 16: Applied Doctoral Research Project & Updates

What You Should Know about BMAL 889

If you are in the ‘new guide’, things are very different for you than they were for me, or even my wife, Michele, in her doctoral journey.

By the time I was in BMAL 889 it was the fall term of 2024. I waited until the last week of August (summer term) to FINALLY get my IRB approval, which took over 100 days, by the way.

The last week of August meant that I needed A LOT of help from my chair to get everything done and submitted. Remember that piece of advice: form a rock-solid relationship with your chair?

In that last week of August (BMAL 888), I was driving on the freeway for a business trip in Missouri and making my way back to Minneapolis to catch a flight home. It was the Friday of the last day of the course. During the six-hour drive, I would receive notifications that a new message was coming in from either my chair or the admin reviewer. I would pull over at the next rest stop, make the change, and keep on driving.

I arrived at the airport and I remember vividly that I was waiting for the train to go to the gate and I got the last ping saying that BMAL 888 was approved!

GREAT!

The rest of the project flew by.

By the first week of September, I had dates set up for my interviews.

In the second week of September, I was conducting my data analysis.

By the first week of October, I had finished Tasks 14-16.

The last weekend of November, I flew down to Arkansas (from Alaska) to meet my chair in person and do my final defense.

I will get to that in the next course, BMAL 890

Bottom Line

The post provides an overview of the BMAL 889 course, which is a critical final step for doctoral candidates in the Doctor of Strategic Leadership program at Liberty University. It emphasizes the development and completion of the doctoral research project, including conducting a field study and presenting findings.

This blog has been found most useful by students reading it in order. I wrote a post a week to chronicle my time in the entire program, and for the most part, they are tagged by course. For example, here is BMAL 889. I have included a lot of my papers as PDFs. Feel free to use them as a guide.
