Foursquare, goodbye

There comes a time in every man’s life when he just has to let go.

For some it is the 30 inch waist line they had back in high school when they woo’ed the girls in their acid washed jeans and pegged legs.

For others it is that hobby of collecting Beanie Babies that their neighbor announced on Facebook and he finally came out of the proverbial closet.

For me it is my ‘almost’ four year addiction to Foursquare.

I woke up last Sunday and realized, what in the hell am I doing? I am here collecting virtual badges for no other reason than to one-up my family and friends.

I was once the mayor of my hometown and several others across the country. I had almost 8,000 check-ins and left some, what I thought was valuable, tips at several locations and so many ‘friends’ that I reached my limit.

Why?

I have no idea. I never received any REAL benefit of playing this stupid little game. I did acquire a stalker or two though. One time a lady walked up to me at Home Depot and said she followed me on Foursquare. I don’t even know how she knew who I was since my profile picture was a cartoon of my dog. Another time a dog training client drove ALL the way to Willow so they could check-in at our place.

Like other addiction, I don’t know if I have quite hit rock bottom yet. I still have the app on my iPhone and I just might check in to leave that extra-special tip or maybe snag the next ulra-hip badge.

Iditarod 40: Mushing Radio premiere episode

March 1, 2012 by robertforto 1 Comment

Last night we aired the premiere episode of Mushing Radio from the studios of KVRF 89.5 in Palmer, Alaska. With a few hiccups it went well and I am pleased with the results. The only drawback that I have is that we did not record this episode as a podcast so that folks can listen at a later date. I was assured that all future shows will be recorded starting with Saturday’s show where we will cover the ceremonial start in Anchorage

Our first guest was Greg Sellentin, the editor and publisher of Mushing Magazine. We spoke about the “state of mushing”. During our conversation we discussed how fans could best follow the sport: subscribe to Mushing Magazine of course! But also ask a lot of questions. New fans and novice musher’s alike will find that this sport has a great group of people that are willing to share their knowledge to anyone who asks.

This is an exciting time for the sport of mushing. With the influx of socail media and just about every team having a blog, website, and Facebook pages, it makes it very easy for fans and mushers to give updates, share pictures and stories and give advice.

We also spoke about the Iditarod and all of the festivities that surround the Iditarod circus, as I like to call it, leading up to the re-start in Willow on Sunday, March 4 at 2:00 pm.

Greg brought up some great points about not jumping into this sport too quickly and to take your time. We encouraged new mushers to find a veteran to work with for a time before they venture out on their own. During the show it was equal parts education and an overview of the sport.

The half-hour show went very quickly and we invited Greg back on any time. It was a great conversation.

Starting Saturday March 3, at 9:30 am we will cover the ceremonial start in Anchorage then on Sunday the re-start in Willow at 1:30 pm and our daily coverage at 6:30 pm up until the awards banquet, some ten days (or so) later. It should be a fun time and we look forward to your comments and questions.

I will be covering the Iditarod everyday on my website and on the radio. Please listen in. Please like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and check in with me on Foursquare.

MapMyDOGWALK

January 24, 2012 by robertforto Leave a Comment

The team that has brought the popular MapMyFITNESS apps has gone to the dogs. Today they announced a brand new app, MapMyDOGWALK. It is an application for your iPhone that tracks your dog walks and outdoor adventures effortlessly and keeps you motivated to hit the road or the trails everyday.

I have been a daily user of the MapMyRIDE app for over two years. Not only do I use it for it’s intended purpose of tracking my rides on my bike but it is my go-to app to track my training for my dog sledding teams.

I use the app to track speed, distance, and time and can even say that the app has come close to saving my life! Using the GPS feature I can plot my exact location on the trail and use it to find my way home if I get lost in the minus 20 degree temperatures in the wilds of Alaska!

Of course everybody posts everything on Twitter and Facebook these days. With the MapMy series of apps it makes this effortless. Your friends can literally be on the trail, adventures, 5K run, or whatever you indulge in, using the ‘live feed” feature. Heck you can even post pictures too!

I am sure that the new MapMyDOGWALK will be a big hit. Who knows, I might just get my dog an iPhone and let him walk himself…

More information about the MapMyDog app:

Exercise your dog and get healthy at the same time! Log your walks, automatically track your calories, and sync with your free account at www.mapmywalk.com.

MapMyDOGWALK uses the built-in GPS technology of your iPhone to enable you to track your walks and gets you closer to achieving your health and fitness goals. Step out your front door, hit the road or trail, and this app will effortlessly mark out your path along an interactive map and record essential metrics including duration, distance, pace, speed and elevation. Once you finish your walk, save your data and it automatically uploads to MapMyWalk.com where you can view your route, walk data, and a comprehensive workout history.

The new MapMyDOGWALK also gives you the ability to easily share your workout data with friends and family via email and Twitter, listen to your iPod during your walk without leaving the application, and geo-tag photos along your route.
iMapMyWalk boasts all of these great features:

•Real-time tracking that measures and displays time, distance, pace, speed and elevation
•An interactive map that lets you view your current location and exactly where you have traveled along your route
•Synchronization with your online Training Log on MapMyWalk.com
•Manual entry of workout data directly from the app so you can easily record your indoor activities like gym workouts and cardio sessions on the treadmill
•Twitter integration that enables you to tweet your workout data to friends and family
•iPod integration that allows you to select and control your music while the app is running
•A geo-tagging photo capability that automatically uploads any photos you take along your walk to your saved route on MapMyWalk.com
•Voice Feedback detailing distance, pace, and speed. Get your walk data in real-time through your headphones.
• Now with Ant+ support: Monitor your heart rate during workouts and track results over time
• BTLE support on iPhone 4S: Wahoo Bluetooth Low Energy heartrate monitor – no dongle needed!

Crunked Badge on Foursquare

December 2, 2011 by robertforto Leave a Comment

The Crunked Badge on Foursquare is another one of the core badges on the app. I got this one at a great Italian restaurant, Evangelo’s, in Wasilly, Alaska with my daughter, Nicole on our trip up here to buy our new house.

The unlock text reads:

That’s 4+ stops in one night for you!

School Night Badge on Foursquare

November 30, 2011 by robertforto Leave a Comment

The School Night Badge on Foursquare is one of those badges you can only get as a “night owl”, or at least someone that travels a lot. I got this badge on one of my flights to Alaska. They always seem to be red eyes…

The unlock text reads:

Checking in after 3am on a school night? Well done!
