For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 7 prompt is Goths. We watched the movie The Craft (1996) on HBO Max
Storyline
A young girl new to a Catholic school befriends a coven of witches whom the other students either shun or fear. But when a powerful invocation goes wrong, the consequences could endanger their lives.
‘The Craft‘ excels with its believable witchcraft themes and standout performances, particularly Fairuza Balk’s scene-stealing work, alongside impressive special effects that enhance without overwhelming. The four leads demonstrate excellent chemistry and relatable depth. However, opinions divide on the writing quality, with some finding the narrative disjointed, while horror elements receive mixed reactions for lacking genuine scares. Character development feels sudden and uneven to some viewers, though the film’s moral themes about power corruption resonate strongly.
Our thoughts on The Craft (1996)
This is pretty good b-movie occult thriller. Some internal inconsistency; fair acting, some genuinely memorable images, but mostly Catholic school girls looking like models (did anyone in *your* high school dress that cool?), non-existent adults (except for the shop owner who runs a firetrap bookstore – lots of white gauze and lit candles), and a throwback tale of moral caution about messing around with “things you do not understand”.
5 out of 10 stars
Trivia
Robin Tunney wore an auburn wig throughout filming because she shaved her head for her role in “Empire Records (1995)“, which wrapped up a month before production started on this film.
While researching The Craft, Fairuza Balk became familiar with Panpipes Magickal Marketplace in Hollywood, eventually buying the store and continuing to operate it until 2001 when she sold it to Jymie Darling and Vicky Adams, whom she had brought in as managers after her own purchase in 1995.
All of the “teen” actresses were in their twenties at the time of filming. Rachel True was almost 30 years old.
