For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 19 prompt is Rad Remake. We watched the movie The Lords of Salem (2012) on Amazon Prime.

Storyline

First off, we took liberty with changing the prompt for tonight as we are visiting Salem, Massachusetts and wanted to watch this film while we were here. It was cool to see some of the same locations we saw during our time here in the movie.

Radio DJ Heidi is sent a box containing a record, a “gift from the Lords”. The sounds within the grooves trigger flashbacks of her town’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the Lords back to take revenge on Salem, Massachusetts?

‘The Lords of Salem’ delivers stunning cinematography and moody atmosphere that evokes 1970s European horror, with striking visuals and artistic ambition earning widespread praise. However, the film suffers from problematically slow pacing, weak and confusing writing, and tedious execution that causes many viewers to lose interest. Performances are divisive, particularly the lead role, while the horror effectiveness splits audiences. Those appreciating atmospheric art-house horror may find value, but others will struggle with its deliberate, sluggish approach and narrative emptiness.

Our thoughts on The Lords of Salem (2012)

Rob Zombie forgoes campiness and gore in favor of deeply creepy and artful horror in this occasionally cluttered but altogether unsettling piece of unforgettable horror. Guaranteed to spawn at least a few nightmares.

Trivia

One of the real life judges of the Salem witch trials was named John Hathorne, pronounced Hawthorne. His descendant, the famous historical novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, changed his name to be spelled like it sounds.

Rob Zombie has hinted at this film being a metaphorical and spiritual prequel to his Halloween films.

There are no digital effects in the film.
