Jocks | 31 Nights of Horror

Storyline

Abusive former summer camp caretaker Cropsy, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong five years earlier, lurks around upstate NY summer Camp Stonewater with garden shears and bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.

The Burning’ stands out primarily for Tom Savini’s exceptional practical effects work, considered among the best of 1980s slashers, and Rick Wakeman’s effective electronic score. The infamous raft scene earns particular acclaim as a defining genre moment. However, most criticize the film as a blatant Friday the 13th clone with slow, uneven pacing that drags for the first hour. The writing receives mixed reactions, and engagement levels vary significantly, working best for dedicated slasher fans willing to overlook its derivative nature.

Our thoughts on The Burning (1981)

We are deliberately picking movies this year that havent spent much time on the previous challenges and we are feeling it with this cheese.

This movie feels like a total rip off of friday the 13th, which is fine but the movie ends up being really dissapointing. The movie goes that a guy was burned badly by some camp goers at a camp and hospitalized, and he comes back to get revenge. It just isn’t well made and felt really long and took too long to get to the important part of the movie. It is overly long and boring and when a kill happens it isn’t so special. The movie was really dissapointing and boring do not recommend.

Trivia

Special effects make-up artist Tom Savini turned down the film Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981) in order to work on this film.

The film’s composer, Rick Wakeman, was originally offered a percentage of whatever profits that the film made, but he had decided to settle for a fee instead, as he felt that it absolutely had no chance of being successful. To Wakeman’s complete surprise, however, it became the biggest grossing horror film in Japan at the time.

Special effects make-up artist Tom Savini was not very happy with his work on Cropsy’s burn make-up in the film, as he was only given three days to actually create it.
