For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 4 prompt is Stories Come to Life. We watched the movie Urban Legend on Amazon Prime.

Storyline

A college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to certain urban legends.

Our Thoughts on Urban Legend (1998)

Everything in this film is mediocre: the acting, the story, the setting design… etc. The standouts for me would be loretta devine and rebecca gayhearts performances and the killer i would also say was a surprising choice that really did caught me off guard. The main girl is so boring and not charismatic at all, and we get to know virtually nothing about the characters, they’re all just paper thin stereotypes. It’s really sad to see a movie that was made just for money and seems like there was virtually no effort in making it stand out in the slightest.

Trivia

Danielle Harris (Tosh) was a smoker at the time and thrilled to be allowed to smoke while working. She quickly realized that shooting scenes while smoking meant that she was going to have to smoke cigarettes for hours all day while they shot. She eventually got sick of it and quit smoking.

Rebecca Gayheart got sick after eating Pop Rocks all day for the classroom scene.

Sarah Michelle Gellar accepted the role of Sasha, but had to back out due to schedule conflicts with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).

This film co-stars two of Hollywood’s most iconic horror movie slashers. Brad Dourif, who portrays Chucky in the Child’s Play films, and Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

The film has been credited by both cinema and folklore scholars as being one of the first major films to redistribute the urban legends and folklore depicted within it to the public.
