This film is peak Guillermo del Toro. Stunning cinematography, good story and character development, and stellar performances from Oscar Issac and Jacob Elordi. I went into this film with low expectations, as many films in this genre are so predictable and underwhelming. This was not the case for this film. We got a whole new look at these characters and this story, without compromising the essence of what makes it familiar. Could we have just seen the rebirth of this classic cinematic universe?

Storyline

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley‘s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Our Thoughts on Frankenstein (2025)

A gothic opera soaked in sadness and snow. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is the adaptation of his dreams – fierce, fragile, tragic. Jacob Elordi gives the performance of his career, portraying the Creature as a being of grace and anguish. Oscar Isaac’s Victor is as tortured as he is brilliant. The film is gorgeous in every way: the production design, the costuming, the blood-red skies and green shadows. Alexandre Desplat’s score lingers in your bones. But what sets this apart is the soul. Few monster movies ever ask: what happens when the monster wants to die? Fewer still answer so devastatingly.

Trivia

Frankenstein’s laboratory and Captain Anderson’s ship were fully constructed sets. “I want real sets”, director Guillermo del Toro explains. “I don’t want digital, I don’t want AI, I don’t want simulation. I want old-fashioned craftsmanship: people painting, building, hammering, plastering.”
