For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 9 prompt is Creepy Neighbors. We watched the movie Distrubia on Amazon Prime.

Storyline

After his father is killed in a car accident, things unravel for Kale Brecht and he is placed under house-arrest for punching his Spanish teacher. Having nothing better to do, Kale occupies himself by spying on his neighbors. But one night, he witnesses what appears to be a murder going on in Mr. Turner’s house. Kale becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind these murders but, after a few unsettling run-ins with Mr. Turner, it becomes a matter of life and death. And the ominous question: Who is watching whom?

Our Thoughts on Disturbia (2007)

The first five minutes were great and then…

This movie is downright awful. Maybe because I am middle -age now, but even then it is terrible. It is so sophmoric and badly done…

It could be called teenage version of rear window

2 out of 10 stars

Trivia

During filming, David Morse (Mr. Turner) did not speak to Shia LaBeouf (Kale) or any of the other teens. LaBeouf said, “When we finished filming, he was very friendly. But he’s a method actor, and as long as we were shooting, he wouldn’t say a word to us.”

In the Spanish version, Mr. Gutierrez teaches Italian instead of Spanish.

The movie has similarities with 1985 horror movie “Fright Night”. In both, there is a teenager who spies on his neighbour with binoculars, suspecting that something odd is going on, the mother of the spying boy invites the strange neighbour to her house thereby surprising the teenager and ultimately there is indeed a sinister issue with the weird neighbour (a vampire and a serial killer respectively). Coincidentally, in 2011, DreamWorks produced the remake of Fright Night (2011)
