For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 23 prompt is Blumhouse. We watched the movie The Visit on Amazon Prime.
Storyline
Two children spend a week at their grandparents’ house while their single mom goes on a relaxing vacation with her boyfriend. Becca decides to film a documentary about her grandparents to help her mom reconnect with her parents, and to find out some things about her parents as well. While filming, Becca and her little brother Tyler discover a dark secret about their grandparents.
Our Thoughts on The Visit (2015)
One of my favorite directors, no matter the genre, is M. Night Shyamalan. He has a way of storytelling that is gripping and uncoventional.
These country folks have strange habits that aren’t seen in other movies. Like naked grandma scratching at walls as a nightime habit. The brother and sister are a good match in casting and work together. Has a modern touch with video calls, & the movie prodigy. Most of it feels believable with no major cgi interference. Brother knows things are messed up but sister is more sympathic. Eventually they need to defend themselves. The twist ending is better than I expected.

Trivia
According to statements made on Twitter, director M. Night Shyamalan prepared three different cuts of the film: one that was “pure comedy,” another that was “pure horror,” and a final one that “fell somewhere in between.”
Director M. Night Shyamalan used his fee from his science-fiction-adventure movie After Earth (2013)to self-produce this film. In his own words, this was “an attempt to regain artistic control” after his recent movies had been denied final cut, and were even taken away from him in post-production.
(at around 1h 12 mins) While playing Yahtzee, Pop Pop says Tyler is playing with “Milton Bradley-approved strategy”. Becca corrects him, saying the game is now made by Hasbro. Hasbro bought Milton Bradley in 1984.
(at around 46 mins) Although Tyler points out during Becca’s interview on Thursday that her sweater is on inside out, she doesn’t correct it for the rest of the day.
