For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Night 22 prompt is Jumpscare. We watched the movie The Strangers. on Amazon Prime.

Storyline

After returning from a wedding reception, a couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks. The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive.

Our Thoughts on The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers, follows a couple as they stay in a vacant vacation home after some relationship issues not realizing they will soon be fighting for their lives as three strangers are hunting them around the house to kill and terrorize. The film is pretty gruesome considering these were based on true events. This film is okay though keeps the suspense. The movie was a bit dragged and took a while for the killers to prey even though most scenes they could have killed the couple on the spot. Though, I guess that’s just part of their game. I would recommend the film for those looking for a light thrill.

Trivia

The film was shot entirely with hand-held cameras or steady cams. Every shot has some camera movement.

During filming, in order to get an actual reaction from Liv Tyler, director Bryan Bertino would tell her where to expect a loud bang from, but would then have the loud noise come from a completely different direction.

According to director Bryan Bertino, the film is partially based on an incident he experienced as a child. One evening a stranger came to his door, asked for someone who was not there, and left. Later, Bertino found out that other homes in his neighborhood had been broken into that night.

The houses shown during the opening credits each resemble a famous house from various classic horror movies, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Halloween (1978) and The Amityville Horror (1979).
