For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Day 25 prompt is Family Friendly. We watched the The Addam’s Family on Amazon Prime.
Storyline
The Addams Family steps out of Charles Addams‘ cartoons. They live with all of the trappings of the macabre (including a detached hand for a servant) and are quite wealthy. Added to this mix is a crooked accountant and his loan shark and a plot to slip the shark’s son into the family as their long-lost Uncle Fester. Can the false Fester find his way into the vault before he is discovered?
Our Thoughts on The Addam’s Family (1991)
I used to watch this show all of the time when I was a kid after school on TBS. I have seen this movie before but it had been a very long time. Generally, speaking this a pretty “fun movie” for most people, kids and adults. I think “fun” is the adjective most people would use in describing this film.
As one who remembered the television series, I thought I would check this out, too. Angelica Huston certainly didn’t match Carolyn Jones’ beauty but she, along with Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd and Christinia Ricci all were entertaining to watch.
There certainly were no end to the colorful imagines, unique scenes and dialog, special-effects and – for those with a surround system, good sound. It all made for an entertaining and fast-moving film.
I didn’t find a lot of laugh-out-loud moments but it did bring a lot of smiles to my face. A lot of this is dark humor, so it helps to appreciate that type of comedy.

Trivia
After the movie premiered children would frequently recognize Raul Julia as Gomez Addams out in public, which according to him, always brought a smile to his face. Julia stated that Gomez Addams was by far his favorite role, and his family said this recognition was especially meaningful to him in the final months of his life because he loved performing for children and making them happy whenever the opportunity presented itself.
The name Wednesday is a reference to the line in the Mother Goose poem that goes, “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
On The Addams Family (1964), the Addamses had a pet lion named Kitty. Though Kitty doesn’t appear in this movie, Gomez can be heard cracking a whip and saying, “Down, Kitty!” as a roar is heard when he goes to the vault early on.
