Spiral | 31 Nights of Horror Challenge

For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Day 6 prompt was Game Gone Wrong. There is a whole genre of these types of movies and an entire franchise. I choose the best of them, mainly because I like Chris Rock and Samuel L., it is the latest in the Saw-style with Spiral (2021).

Storyline

Working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Our Thoughts on Spiral

Saw has always used tricks, corny dialogue, and almost comedic shots. To think that the original series is a masterpiece this can’t possibly live up to is absurd. All you have to do is hear the title of Saw 3D to know that’s what they were going for.

This isn’t an amazing production, but it matches up to the rest of the series. There’s a solid twist and decent deaths. There are a lot of backstories not common with the rest of Saw that were almost unnecessary, but what can they do at this point after nine movies to keep it fresh?

Trivia

In order to secure an R rating, the film had to be submitted to the MPAA 11 times. All other attempts resulted in a rating of NC-17.
