I am participating in a 30-day challenge. This time it is all about horror! If you know anything about us here at the Fort you would know that we are hardcore horror fans. Each October we watch a movie each night in that we dub “The 31 Nights of Horror.”

Day 6 prompt: Funniest Horror Movie Character

Freddy Kruger from Nightmare on Elm Street

Obviously, when people go into watching a horror film, the primary thing that they’re looking for is scares. People want to be frightened and made to feel uneasy, nervous, and worried. That’s what this genre of film is all about, and whether it be a slasher, a psychological horror flick, or something to do with the paranormal, people want scares. However, throughout film history, the horror genre has also brought viewers tons of really funny moments and characters, both unintentionally and on purpose. While some movies are just so bad they become laughable, there are also many characters written to specifically provide funny moments. They typically take the audience out of their scary mindset, which can set up an even bigger scare. There are many honorable mentions: Chucky, Ghostface from Scream, Ash from the Evil Dead, and Tallahassee from Zombieland but.. The king of the puns and one-liners, Freddy Krueger is someone who provides a lot of laughs throughout his movies, and he is a great example of how horror characters can be both funny and petrifying. Freddy is incredibly scary, creating some terrifying moments with his scary presence and unique kills. But the fact he provides so many funny comments to his victims really helps to make him one of the most entertaining horror icons of all time.
