Freddy Krueger | 31 Nights of Horror

For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Day 20 prompt is Freddy Krueger. We watched the movie, Abraham Lincoln: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors on Amazon Prime.

Storyline

Picking up where the original Nightmare left off, a group of children at a local hospital face Freddy Krueger. One of them is Kristen. Working with a doctor assigned to the case, the kids realize their special abilities within the nightmare world. When Freddy captures one of them, they lead a rescue attempt into Krueger’s domain, in hopes of putting his spirit to rest once and for all.

Our Thoughts on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

It had been several years since I have seen this one and it is so cheesy. It is fully of silly taglines but the practical effects are good. I like the old stuff compared to the CGI.

Trivia

On the VHS release, the music video for Dokken‘s “Dream Warriors” appeared after the credits. The video contains many scenes from the movie and ends when the band vanquishes Freddy, causing him to wake up from his “nightmare,” and ask, “Who were those guys?” (despite them telling him the whole song that they’re the dream warriors.”)

The Freddy glove that was stolen from the set of this film was found in another movie: it was hanging on the wall of the work shed in Evil Dead II (1987), released the same year. It was part of a continued banter between directors Wes Cravenand Sam Raimi. See The Hills Have Eyes (1977), The Evil Dead (1981), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and Evil Dead II (1987) for more.

(At around 29 mins) When the clay puppet’s face turns into Freddy’s, special effects man Doug Beswick used stop-motion animation. Filming began with a clay Freddy face that was made plainer in each frame. The result was then run backward, and that is what appears in the final cut of the film.

Jennifer Rubin was told by some of her fans that her character of Taryn had caused them to quit drugs, and the actress is very proud of the fact.

For the dream sequence, in which a Dick Cavett interview is interrupted by Freddy Krueger, Sally Kellerman was originally in the script as the guest, but Cavett was then allowed to pick the person he’d be interviewing. He picked Zsa Zsa Gabor, because he thought she was the dumbest person he’d ever met in his life, and he’d never have her on his show in real life. So, if there was one person he’d want to see killed by Freddy, it would be her.
