British Horror | 31 Nights of Horror Challenge

For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Day 22 prompt was British Horror. I should have chosen a Hammer film, but I went old school with An American Werewolf in London (1981). It has been a very long time since I have seen this one, maybe since I was a kid, but you can never forget the transformation scene in the apartment. It is one of the coolest in horror.

Storyline

Two American college students are on a walking tour of Britain and are attacked by a werewolf. One is killed, the other is mauled. The werewolf is killed but reverts to its human form, and the local townspeople are unwilling to acknowledge its existence. The surviving student begins to have nightmares of hunting on four feet at first but then finds that his friend and other recent victims appear to him, demanding that he commit suicide to release them from their curse, being trapped between worlds because of their unnatural deaths.

Our Thoughts on American Werewolf in London

In 1981 I was ten years old when the movie first came out. My family & I went to see it in the movie theater when it was new. I recall laughing and almost crying from being scared. I feel like I’m ten years old and in the theater again when I re-watch this movie.

American Werewolf in London is one of the best comedy horror films ever made, yet as some of the scariest moments ever filmed.

This movie uses old-school special effects, giving any of today’s CGI effects a “run for its money”! I am mainly talking about the infamous werewolf transformation scene, which is still viewed and re-viewed by many today – considered one of the greatest transformation scenes ever!

If you have never seen American Werewolf in London, then I highly recommend it for viewing entertainment if you like horror and/or comedy.
