For this year’s 31 Nights of Horror Challenge, the Day 6 prompt was J-Horor. I haven’t seen too many Japanese horror movies besides The Ring and The Grudge. I have heard they do things differently over there and I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed One Missed Call (2003).
Storyline
People mysteriously start receiving voicemail messages from their future selves, in the form of the sound of them reacting to their own violent deaths, along with the exact date and time of their future death, listed on the message log. The plot thickens as the surviving characters pursue the answers to this mystery which could save their lives.
Our Thoughts on One Missed Call
An intriguing movie about loss, abuse, and technology told in a way that is not the same in American cinema.
The reality TV scene reminds me a bit of The Running Man, a Stephen King short story that was made into a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Richard Dawson where people are glued to their TV’ to watch people meet their fate.
I thought that was the best part of this movie.

Trivia
In the Philippines, the movie poster carries the tagline “For the creators of The Ring and Juon: The Grudge 2.” The two mentioned movies have no connection with this movie (except both movies also came from Japan where this movie was originated).
