Pizza

The Rock rocks the Great White North

November 17, 2013 by robertforto Leave a Comment

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I have had pizza in just about every state in the country. Tonight we headed over to The Rock, a new pizza place in Anchorage, Alaska.

As soon as we walked up we noticed the the cool brick and iron work and the fire!

We walked in the restaurant, once a Red Robin burger joint, and was assaulted (pleasantly, I might add) to a barrage of rock-n-roll, album covers, and black lights.

We were seated quickly and our waitress came over to take our drink order. My wife, Michele, ordered a beer and we ordered an appetizer.

The place is awesome! It is decorated in cool rock related gear and the booth seats are covered in song titles. The menu items all have a rock-n-roll theme.

We ordered a 16″ pizza, the Founders Favorite–a red sauce pie with pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella and ricotta cheese. We added mushrooms too.

Our appetizer arrived shortly before the pizza. We ordered the brown sugar mozzarella bread. It comes with a side of ranch and pizza sauce for dipping.

“This stuff is addicting!” Michele said. She’s right it was amazing. It is just the right amount of sweet and cheesy and the tangy kick of the Ranch was an awesome complement.

Our pizza was delivered on a large cookie sheet and our server dished us each up a slice. Michele is picky about her pizza and she liked it. I love all pizza and this rivals any pies in Alaska including Moose’s Tooth and Mountain High Pizza.

Even the rest rooms are decorated in cool concert stickers, black fixtures and industrial steampunkt style.

By the time we left the place was filling up quickly. On our way out I glanced into the bar. They have a cool fire pit table in the middle of the room. Next time we will sit in there and order a sandwich and a rocktail !

Our bill was reasonable. 44 bucks and I left a ten buck tip just because of what the waitress said when Michele commented on the food. “Isn’t everything amazing? I will be 400 pounds when I quit here,”‘ said our server.

Hell yeah, we will be back! Anchorage Alaska’s restaurant scene is getting better and better.

Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria

November 3, 2011 by robertforto Leave a Comment

I could eat pizza every day for the rest of my life. Think about it–it’s the world perfect food. It has your meats, your grains, your dairy and even your veggies to make mom proud! In fact, if I was stranded on a deserted island, I would grow a beard, name a volleyball, Wilson and eat Moose’s Toothpizza every day.

I have sat down to a decent slice of pizza pie in practically every state of this great nation, but I have to say that Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria is some of the best I have ever had.

This is not your manufactured pizza that you find ice burnt in the freezer section at the grocery. This is sit down with a knife and fork type of pie.

I had the High Protein Land:

Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Italian Sausage, Green Pepper, Red Onion, Mozzarella, Provolone, Marinara.

The small is just $8.75 (good by Alaska standards) and more than a mouthful.

But what I find most interesting is this place is packed to the rafters every single day! I have been here for lunch on a Wednesday and tonight, a weeknight. Not only do the people of Anchorage love this place but it’s reputation stretches far and wide…

I was sitting next to a 70s-something Golden Girl, really she looked just like Sophia! and she and I started up a conversation. She said that she was visiting Alaska from Scranton, Pennsylvania with her son and daughter in-law and her travel agent insisted that they visited Moose’s Tooth.

What did they do? They headed here as soon as they got off the plane!

As I have said before, if you come to Alaska leave the tour buses and sandals with socks crowd alone and rent a car at the airport. That is the way to see Alaska. There is more to this great state than bears and Sarah (Palin). Namely Moose’s Tooth.

NaBloPoMo: Last meal. What would it be?

November 2, 2011 by robertforto Leave a Comment

If you knew that whatever you ate next would be your last meal, what would you want it to be?

I have said before and I will say again that if I was stranded on a deserted island and all I had with me was a friend named “Wilson”, my thoughts, and one food it would have to be pizza.

Pizza is the world’s most perfect food. It has all food groups on that cool pyramid that we learned about in school. Never-mind what the creepy lunch lady served us it always conformed to that dagnabit pyramid.

With that being said, if I knew what my last meal would be it would have to be a large High Protein Land pizza from Moose’s Tooth pizza in Anchorage, Alaska.  I know, I know, pizza is pizza right? Wrong. I have had a pizza pie in just about every state in the nation and noting compares to the Moose’s Tooth. If you don’t believe me, come on up to the Last Frontier and give it a try.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Moose’s Tooth or any of its affiliates and I am not paid to promote them in any manner. I do not have family or friends working there and try if I might I can not become the mayor of Moose’s Tooth. Believe me I am trying.

I guess if I was on my death bed or god forbid the execution chamber I would request pizza for my last meal. Well, unless I am on death row in Texas. They used to allow the guys heading to meet their maker, whomever that may be, to order whatever they wanted and the guards would make it up all fancy for them.

Just recently, some nutcase ordered up an eight course meal of chicken fried steaks, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, fried okra, a pound of barbecue, three fajitas, a meat lover’s pizza, a pint of ice cream and a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts. Prison officials said he didn’t eat any of it.  So what happens? Like always, some politico, probably running for city council or something like that, raised a fuss and lickety-split last meals are history.

Well, that’s that. At least in the Longhorn state. Lucky for most of us we can eat as we please and that equals just one thing–quoting the great Homer Simpson: hmmmmm pizza!

If you knew, what would you want your last meal to be?
