A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) really was one of the first movies that hooked me on the horror genre. I was 13 years old living in the Washington D.C. suburbs with my two brothers, mom and step-dad. My dad would drive up a couple times a month to see us on Sunday’s from Richmond.

He would take my brother Ryan and I shopping for school clothes of something else we didn’t need, we would grab a pizza and head to the movies. Usually scary ones if they were playing.

Freddy became the alter-ego of a generation of kids in the 80’s and the franchise went on to make at least a half a dozen sequels. But none of them was as good as the first. Wes Craven’s story telling about a monster in a Christmas sweater, a fedora and razor claws captured a generation and spawned myriad slasher films over the next couple of decades. Nightmare also introduced the world to a little known actor named Johnny Depp. Yep, that Johnny (oooo la la!)…
