NaBloPoMo: What do you still make-believe?

May 29, 2012 by robertforto Leave a Comment

I am participating in the NaBloPoMo challenge for May. It should be a fun one. It is titled: Play.

Today’s topic is: What do you still make-believe?

While I don’t play make-believe I do believe that in this world of hard realties and second-hand gossip there just has to be something to believe in. I think that the spirit of Christmas allows us to believe in what is inside…

As a child you believe that the magic is in opening Santa’s presents. What you don’t learn till your a parent is that the magic starts long before Santa comes. It starts when your childrens eyes light up with whatever traditions your family follows. Mine is when my children used to help put out the cookies and carrots and a Coke for Santa, and when they help me make our special reindeer food and spread it out on the walk for the reindeer to eat when they stopped by. It’s also when you realize that you never stopped hearing the bells you just needed your children to remind you to listen.

No I didn’t but one thing that is sure to creep anyone out is this video of the top five imaginary friends in the movies including Danny Torrance in the The Shining.

Check it out:

NaBloPoMo: Are you a better sport as an adult or more competitive than you were as a child?

I have spoken a great deal on this topic in my posts this past month so I thought I would just offer my favorite quote to tie it all together:

“In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline and self sacrifice. And finally it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?”

NaBloPoMo: Do you think you are a good sport?

That is up for debate. I guess it would depend on who you are asking.

I do not let my kids win at games to make them feel good and I have, on the rare occasion, made a grown man cry when participating in any sport of the backyard variety.

As I have said in my previous posts I am uber-competitive and that is a trait that is either desired or scorned in today’s society.

I firmly agree that  there are no points for second place.

Think about it?

Who came in second in this year’s Kentucky Derby?

Who was second in the NBA Finals?

Who was the runner up on this season of The Voice?

Who was not voted the Celebrity Apprentice this past weekend?

Unless you are on American Idol, I don’t think coming in second place has many perks. Do you?

Does all of this make me a bad sport?

No.

After every game I will always shake the hand of my opponent and tell them “good game.” I will offer a hand to a guy on the field. I will congratulate them for a job well done if they score, knock me down, throw a pick on me or otherwise leave me in the dust.

So in this world of win at all costs in everything from school to sports to business it is not if you win or lose but how you play the game.

NaBloPoMo: Is there any game you are too old to play?

What is the old adage? If it is too loud, you are too old?

I think the same thing applies to games.

I guess it would be unfair to play little league, pee wee football, or possibly whack a piñata at a six year-olds birthday party?

But why do we as adults want to take all the fun away from the kids?

We have plenty of games for just us:

Quarters

Beer Pong

Spin the Bottle

7-minutes in the dark with you-know-who

Poker–of various varieties that sometimes may or may not involve removing of textiles.

Then we have video games.

I saw an episode of The Simpons yesterday and the scene was Bart and Grampa sitting on the floor playing some sort of Space Invaders game.

Bart was yelling instructions to Grampa:

Shoot here!

Capature that!

Shoot there!

Within seconds grandpa was dead–his video game ship anyway.

And he says,

“Awww, I got on the floor for this!”

I think that about sums it up, don’t you?

What game are you too old to play?
