Week 68 of 186 (BMAL716)

August 29, 2021 by robertforto Leave a Comment

Week 68 of approximately 186 are in the books in my doctorate program.

Started the new course, BMAL716 this week right in the middle of a very busy summer and several trips planned. It is always difficult to work on the coursework and travel since many of the assignments have firm deadlines and build on each other. For example, you can not reply to a discussion post until others in the class have posted theirs.
In this term, we have three papers, four discussion posts, and replies. Not a lot of writing, per se, compared to other courses.
I do look forward to exploring outdoor leadership again!

Also, Michele is starting her journey this week too and she is very excited! Please do me a favor and follow her over on LinkedIn.

Weeks 63-67 of 186 (BMAL716)

August 23, 2021 by robertforto Leave a Comment

Weeks 63 through 67 of approximately 186 are in the books in my doctorate program.

Starting another year of grad school today. This marks the seventh year in a row that I have been continuously enrolled.

I look forward to the last Monday of August each year as a time of renewal and new possibilities.

I remember like it was yesterday entering the classroom at UAA for my first class, HPER181. That was in August 2014. I was so young then, even at 44, and wet behind the ears on my educational journey. Even though I completed my first degree way back in 1996, this time was different.

Two degrees down, one more, my doctorate, about 1/3 of the way through. Countless projects, papers, discussion boards, edits, a ton of leadership theory, revisions and probably reading 1000 journal articles thus far.

Also, Michele is starting her journey this week too and she is very excited! Please do me a favor and follow her over on LinkedIn.

Weeks 60 to 62 of 186 (BMAL716)

July 18, 2021 by robertforto Leave a Comment

Weeks 60 through 62 of approximately 186 are in the books in my doctorate program.

School’s out for summer!

A couple of weeks ago I finished up my latest course. It was the first course since starting back to school in 2014 that I did not lose a single point in grading. It is also the only time since I started that I have had a bit of a break. It is hard to believe that I have been enrolled in a course every single term for the last seven years!

This break could not have come at a better time. As I type this, I am using one hand because last weekend I almost cut my index finger off at the base of my left hand. It has been a scary week and hopefully, the surgery that I had on Wednesday will fix everything and I will be back and ready to go when classes start in about five weeks.

The injury also means that I will miss the much anticipated executive leadership expedition but the folks at NOLS were very understanding and accommodating and allowed me to move my spot to next year.

All that being said, I am happy with my progress this term with my research project. I wrote a pretty good proposal and received great feedback from my professor. I hope to use this as my final dissertation project and look forward to seeing where the research takes me.

A lot of you have expressed interest in reading the final paper. As always, I have attached it below.

Also, Michele is starting her journey this week too and she is very excited! Please do me a favor and follow her over on LinkedIn.

Weeks 57-59 of 186 (BMAL716)

Weeks 57 through 59 of approximately 186 are in the books in my doctorate program.

It is hard to believe that another term is almost done. This has been a tough one. I am knee-deep into my strategic management of family-run firms proposal project and this week the methodology section is due. I am looking forward to being finished with this class and then off of school until late August. I need a break but there is still a lot going on including the weeklong backpacking expedition for executive leadership in Wyoming in August. So, no break from school, really.

Also, Michele is starting her journey this week too and she is very excited! Please do me a favor and follow her over on LinkedIn.

Weeks 54-56 of 186 (BMAL716)

June 7, 2021 by robertforto Leave a Comment

Weeks 54 through 56 of approximately 186 is in the books in my doctorate program.

It has been a couple of weeks since the last post. A lot has gone on. First Michele and I went to Las Vegas for some much-needed downtime but then we came back to a very ill dog. Raegan, the sled dog that started it all at Team Ineka passed away on Thursday of last week. I am devastated by her passing. This is the hardest thing about keeping sled dogs.

Back to the course, we are knee-deep into the research methods course and things are progressing nicely. I have completed the first part of my research proposal on the topic of strategic management in family-run firms and it should be an interesting topic to develop.

Also, Michele is starting her journey this week too and she is very excited! Please do me a favor and follow her over on LinkedIn.
