Fortos Fort: A year in the life

Forto’s Fort July 3, 2010

It was July 3, 2010 at about 3 pm when my daughter, Nicole and I landed in Alaska on a cool and very rainy Saturday afternoon and we pulled into the driveway to meet realtor and friend, Dave.

We had pretty much bought the cabin sight unseen in mid-June on the condition that it was to our liking on personal inspection.

To me the visual inspection didn’t mean too much. I had a dream to fulfill and that entailed moving to Alaska.

I had trust in Dave to find us a place. He was a retired musher and he knew what I wanted.

As we got out of the little rental car in the pouring rain I didn’t know what to expect. I can say that the first words mentioned would be, “This is going to be a lot of work!”

We spent the next couple hours checking out the home and the nearly four acres of property.

We had a decision to make.

I told Nicole to text her mom her decision. That’s right the purchase of the house rested squarely on a 12 year old.

She texted: “Mom, we are moving to Alaska!”

We headed to Wasilly to give Dave a check for nine grand and we sealed the deal over the next few days with the owner over countless email messages.

I moved up August 4th and if you are a rabid reader of this blog you have lived this journey with me.

I can say that a lot of blood, sweat and tears have been put into this place over the last 365 days and it is far from complete.

The biggest task still getting Nicole and my wife Michele up here permanently.

We still have a long way to go to make Forto’s Fort into a home, but…

What a difference a year makes!
