Road Trippin: Little Man Ice Cream

We all have our vices. Some are more extreme than others. Mine, perhaps is a bastion from my childhood, Coca-Cola. My wife, Michele’s is too. It is ice cream.

Chocolate ice cream to be precise!

When I was on the airplane headed to Minnesota for our road trip I picked up the airline travel rag (magazine). What else are you going to do in the middle of the night when you can’t sleep upright, its too hot, a kid is screaming behind you, and you don’t think its right to pay six bucks for a movie on a 4 inch screen.

As I was thumbing thru the magazine it had all these picturesque destinations highlighted where you could fly on your next get away. Of course they were only places this particular airline, with the animals on the tail, flew.

Inside where cool things to do in places like Milwaukee (why would you vacation there?), Sacramento, San Diego, San Antonio, the Mexican tourist spots and Denver.

Now, I have lived in Denver quite a while. I thought I knew just about everything to do there but boy was I wrong! A saw an ad for a place called Little Man Ice Cream in the magazine and I knew, right then and there, that we would have to visit.

So after the Rockies game and dinner at our favorite restaurant in LoDo, BDs Mongolian Grill, we headed over to the Highlands neighborhood to check it out.

As soon as you arrive at Little Man Ice Cream you notice first the trademark three story milk can that is the place then you notice the line around the block. This place has to be good.

My son Tyler and I stood in line while the girls, Michele and Nicole, grabbed us one of the few open tables. After a wait of just five minutes or so we placed our order.

One scoop of Cinnamon gelato for me. Two scoops of the same for Tyler. A scoop of Lemon gelato for Nicole in a cup and a scoop of 16th Street Chocolate in a waffle cone for Michele (of course!)

Price: 11 bucks. That is at least five bucks cheaper than that place that throws your ice cream around on a stone counter while adding gummy bears and chocolate sprinkles.

The ice cream and gelato was awesome.

If you are not sure what Gelato is: Gelato is different from some ice cream because it has a lower butterfat content. Gelato typically contains 4-8% butterfat, versus 14% for ice cream in the United States. Gelato has a higher sugar content than ice cream. Read more on wikipedia

Back to Little Man…

This place was not only good but it has a story behind it.

Little Man Ice Cream is making a difference. The company has made a commitment to donate one three ounce scoop of rice for every scoop of ice cream that they sell. The rice is delivered to third world countries throughout the world. So far they have donated over….

Now this is cool. Sure Ben and Jerry’s gives to the environment and all that jazz. But you pay 6 bucks a pint for Jerry’s wacky flavors in order for them to be a philanthropist.

It just shows you that the little guy can do their part too. You don’t have to be a billion dollar company with a headquarters building in a corporate center to make a difference. If every one just did a little something we all could make the world a better place.

So the next time you visit Denver, or if you live here just take a drive downtown, check out Little Man Ice Cream.

You’ll be glad you did.
